On Friday, September 8th Vianet announced that they have lit up and are connecting customers in Uxbridge and Brock townships in the first phase of their Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) network build in Durham Region.

In a great stride toward enhanced connectivity, Vianet is expanding its fibre network into the rural landscape of Durham. This collaborative project, achieved in partnership with the federal and provincial governments, and Durham OneNet Inc. on behalf of Durham Region, is a testament to Vianet’s commitment to working with communities to deliver leading-edge internet services to more homes.

Over the past ten years, Vianet has created fibre-connected communities throughout rural Caledon, King, Adjala and Whitchurch-Stouffville. With hundreds of kilometres of advanced fibre optic infrastructure built and accessible, home and business owners now have access to the best Internet technology, and soon, Durham Region will as well.

Only weeks after the Government of Canada and Government of Ontario’s July 26th announcement of broadband funding for Durham, Vianet has completed the first in-home installations to their active fibre network and will continue bringing more customers online this month. Simultaneously, construction crews progress into new areas, clearly representing Vianet's steadfast commitment to building Fibre internet for more residents.

"We have been with Vianet for over three years now on their fixed wireless service. Their Internet service helped us through the pandemic to work from home, and homeschool our four kids. Vianet is now going to bring us even faster internet for our growing family and our business,” celebrates Jeremy Mank, Owner, On The Ridge Events. “We are excited to be able to get city-quality internet speeds in the country, thanks to Vianet."

The expansion of Vianet’s fibre network is a testament to the power of partnerships and innovation, helping ensure that Durham Region can thrive in an ever-evolving digital world and provide the quality internet everyone deserves.

“Congratulations to Vianet on this milestone achievement. Partnerships, such as these, support our vision of connecting all residents, businesses, and institutions across the region with reliable high-speed internet access. We are grateful for Vianet’s partnership and look forward to seeing their hard work progress. “

- Paul Frizado, President and CEO, Durham OneNet Inc.

“Today is a celebration of progress; of how collaboration among all levels of government and the private sector is helping ensure that Durham Region’s underserved communities have greater access to essential broadband services. High-speed and affordable internet is crucial for communication, education and the economic competitiveness of Durham’s rural residents. Today’s connection is another step forward on our journey to creating more connected communities.”

- John Henry, Regional Chair and CEO, The Regional Municipality of Durham

“In contrast to those who've long enjoyed high-speed internet, this community has weathered substantial hardships. They've coped with the challenges of unreliable, costly services, and persistently fought to bridge the digital divide. Now, their enthusiasm for fibre internet has become a reality. It is gratifying to build fibre to rural Ontario and today, we join Durham in celebrating this milestone while we continue to expand coverage to reach more residents in the region.“

- Lisa McWhirter, Special Projects, Vianet

“High-speed Internet access is essential, especially for those living and working in rural communities in Ontario and across Canada. Today, Vianet is connecting homes in Uxbridge to high-speed internet, demonstrating that our government’s investments and partnerships with companies like Vianet are making a real difference for residents in our community. Today’s announcement is a step toward our government’s goal of connecting 98% of Canadians and 100% by 2030 to reliable, affordable high-speed internet.” says Jennifer O'Connell, Member of Parliament for Pickering-Uxbridge

“Our government is building a stronger Ontario by delivering reliable high-speed internet access to every community across the province,” said the Honourable Kinga Surma, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure. “By continuing to invest in key infrastructure, we are empowering communities, businesses and individuals alike. We will continue to bridge the digital divide, foster economic growth, and ensure that everyone can work and learn online, participate in the agriculture sector and connect with their loved ones.”

- Honourable Kinga Surma, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure
